Mother Sheehan

Mark Steyn speaks for me on Cindy Sheehan:

Casey Sheehan was a 21-year old man when he enlisted in 2000. He re-enlisted for a second tour, and he died after volunteering for a rescue mission in Sadr City. Mrs. Sheehan says she wishes she'd driven him to Canada, though that's not what he would have wished, and it was his decision.

His mother has now left Crawford, officially because her mother has had a stroke, but promising to return. I doubt she will. Perhaps deep down she understands she's a woman whose grief curdled into a narcissistic rage, and most Americans will not follow where she's gone -- to the wilder shores of anti-Bush, anti-war, anti-Iraq, anti-Afghanistan, anti-Israel, anti-American paranoia. Casey Sheehan's service was not the act of a child. A shame you can't say the same about his mom's new friends.

NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sixty-one percent of Americans polled disapprove of the way President George W. Bush is handling the situation in Iraq; just 34 percent approve, according to the latest Newsweek Poll conducted Tuesday, Aug. 2 to Thursday, Aug. 4.

Seems like Cindy's got comapny...

“We are not waging a war on terror in this country. We’re waging a war of terror. The biggest terrorist in the world is George W. Bush!”

So declared Cindy Sheehan earlier this year during a rally at San Francisco State University.

I only wish we could ask the people who flung themselves the WTC towers if they'd concur.

Sheehan, who is demanding a second meeting with Bush, stated: “We are waging a nuclear war in Iraq right now. That country is contaminated. It will be contaminated for practically eternity now.”

Did the newsweek poll ask about our nuking of Iraq?

As to asking the victims of 9/11; despite it's crassness, I will play along. I wonder what they would have thought if they knew that as they were jumping to their deaths, their president consciously decided to ignore their tragedy and instead chose to endanger the lives of students at a florida school by remaining there; a motionless target publicized weeks in advance.
Or what they might think knowing that for the first time in history, not one but four commercial jetliners without transponders were allowed to fly around the country unescorted. (Actually a violation of US law.)
I could go on and on...

As for the nuclear war in Iraq, the US and British forces have used hundreds of thousands of pounds of depleted uranium munitions in Iraq. Although the effects are still unknown, there is strong evidence that the DU, which has a half life of around 4.5 billion years, is resposible for higher than average cancer and birth defect rates in Gulf War Vets, Iraq War soldiers, and the Iraqi population as a whole. This is the nuclear war of which she speaks.

Back to the issue at hand; despite the quotes attributed to Mrs. Sheehan, she really only has one question to ask the president: "For what noble purpose did my son die?"

You'd think that if he can find time to boonie around the ranch with Lance Armstrong, he'd have the time to tell Cindy the answer to her question.

He hasn't.

The second link is partial bunk. To wit: 8:46 a.m. F-15 fighter jets are dispatched from Otis Air Force Base in Mass., but because Flight 11's transponder is off, Air Force pilots do not know which direction to travel to meet the plane. NEADS personnel spend the next several minutes watching their radar scopes waiting for Flight 11 to reappear.

Unaware that their intended target has already crashed into the World Trade Center, the F-15s from Otis Air Force Base are sent to military-controlled airspace off Long Island and ordered to remain in a holding pattern until between 9:09 and 9:13 a.m.

Also the F16's dispatched from Rome, NY were Air National Guard, so the "USAF inaction" is a straw man at best.
